History Comes Alive During DVC August 11 at the K.L. Lincoln Corner
Dr. Anita Hibler and William Strobridge recently published Elephants for Mr. Lincoln: American Civil War-Era Diplomacy in Southeast
Asia, a new book available at Kuala Lumpur's Lincoln Corner that chronicles an interesting period in the US relationship with
Southeast Asia. The Embassy hosted a digital video conference with Dr. Hibler at the KL Lincoln Center on August 11, during which
the author shared her perspectives on the relationship between the U.Sand Southesast Asia during the period leading up to the
American Civil War. Participants of the DVC heard that the King of Siam at the time actually offered fighting elephants to
President Abraham Lincoln to help fight for the Civil War. Dr. Hibler recounted these and other historical anecdotes with a panel
of Malaysian experts in history and international relations that included the President of the American Studies Association of
Malaysia (Prof. Dr. K.S. Nathan), History professor Dr. Shakila Yacob of the University of Malaya, and Mr. James Wong, political
analyst with Malaysiakini.
