US Fulbright Scholar discusses "Corporate Islam And the Islamic Workplace in Malaysia"
On October 14, the Fulbright Alumni Association Malaysia (FAAM) in collaboration with Open University Malaysia sponsored a
lecture entitled "Corporate Islam And the Islamic Workplace in Malaysia" by Dr. Patricia Sloane-White, of the Department of
Sociology & Anthropolgy, Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia
(IIUM). Dr. Sloane-White is a Senior Fulbright Scholar and Assistant Professor from the University of Delaware who is spending a
year at IIUM under the U.S. Fulbright Program.
During her talk, Dr Sloan-White shared her observations on how some Malaysian CEO's are successfully integrating core
Islamic principles, ideals, practices and teachings into the governance of their corporations. Dr. Sloan-White carried out active
research over several months looking at the day-to-day governance of several corporate institutions in Malaysia. She found that
employees are generally receptive to Islamic concepts of justice, and to values such as equity, balance, pluralism and leadership
by consensus. Dr Sloan-White gave the example of an "Anonymous Malaysian Corporate Figure" who has successfully incorporated what
she calls "Corporate Islam" to help promote Islamic modernity, contribute to "universal" justice and progress for all of
Malaysia's citizenry, and to help shape contemporary understanding of the economic, political, and social role of an Islamic
population engaged in capitalist activity. Dr Patricia's talk generated an animated discussion with diverse questions from the
floor.
