Sultan of Selangor pays a visit to the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan
The Sultan of Selangor paid a visit to the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan on Wednesday, August 20th, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador
James R. Keith. The U.S.S. Reagan arrived in Port Klang on a scheduled port call. The ship, named for the 40th U.S.
president, is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered super carrier commissioned in July 2003. With two nuclear reactors, the
carrier can operate for 20 years without refueling, and carries more than 5,500 sailors and over 80 aircraft.
"This visit helps build maritime cooperation and cultural understanding between the United States and Malaysia," said
Rear Adm. Phil Wisecup, commander, Carrier Strike Group 7. "We're all pretty excited to visit a modern, vibrant city like
Kuala Lumpur." This marks the second visit to Malaysia for the USS Ronald Reagan, which last visited in June 2006.
"Our sailors plan to do some sightseeing and shopping in this magnificent country," said Capt. Kenneth Norton, Ronald
Reagan's commanding officer. "They'll also make a positive impact for the needy ashore."
In cooperation with the Rotary Club of Pantai Valley, more than 320 U.S. Navy personnel volunteered their time and effort
for eight community service projects in local children's homes and a local hospice. The U.S. sailors also explored Malaysia,
including rock climbing, elephant rides in Kuala Gandah and tours of downtown Kuala Lumpur and historic Malacca.
